Washington Post (March 9)

European leaders may “attest to a continent fully awakened to the reality of the war. But the truth is that Europe has not taken its defense seriously before now, and it cannot be strategically ‘autonomous’ until it does.” Home to 450 million people with a $17 trillion GDP, defense spending in excess of $200 billion annually, the EU needs to get its act together. “A strong, autonomous Europe benefits the United States as much as it does Europe itself: Partners working in tandem present a more formidable front against any military threat.”

“Fully autonomous–that is, self-driving–cars remain years away. But we may soon inhabit a world where 80 percent of all parcels are delivered by other autonomous vehicles. Pharmacy and cannabis orders, groceries, and on-demand entertainment could come to you not in full-size cars and trucks, but rather in robots, high-tech carriages, wagons (yep, just like the one you had as a kid), and drones.”

Most cities now waste a tremendous amount of space providing parking for cars that aren’t moving 95% of the time. This could change. “When autonomous cars that are allowed to move with nobody inside them become widespread, demand for private cars could fall sharply. Starting in the morning, one car could take a child to school, a city worker to his office, a student to her lecture, party people to a club, and a security guard to his night shift, all more cheaply than taxis. Cars that now sit idle could become much more active, which would drastically change parking needs.”
