With unemployment hitting a 16-year low, Japan’s surprisingly strong job market may provide the nation with needed momentum. “Analysts expect the economy to contract in the second quarter due to the tax hike…. The contraction could be more severe given the weak spending data, although the strong job market and an expected increase in summer bonus payments will underpin spending.”

“The median compensation of chief executives at 200 of the nation’s biggest public companies came in at $15.1 million last year, a 16 percent jump from 2011…. The pay packages — including salary, bonus, benefits, stock and option grants — ranged from $96.2 million at Oracle to $11.1 million at General Motors.” Until the SEC determines rules for Dodd-Frank disclosure requirements, however, we won’t know just how excessive these packages are. The computer maker Lenovo “had a banner year in 2011, with its profits up 73%.” CEO Yang Yuanqing did something unusual with his bonus, which was $3 million more than last year. “He decided to give that raise to his employees instead of himself, and divided it among 10,000 lower-level employees—receptionists and factory workers and the like. They got an average of 2,000 yuan, or $314, apiece.”
