“Twenty-six years ago today, Hong Kong was handed over to China on a promise…. Beijing made the commitment, under an international treaty, to protect Hong Kong’s freedoms, the rule of law, human rights, way of life and autonomy.” China has effectively “ripped up its promises. If there is one lesson from the city’s suffering, it is that China cannot be trusted on any commitments it makes to the West.”

“Every one of the world’s leading economies, including all the countries that make up the G20, is failing to meet commitments made in the landmark Paris agreement in order to stave off climate catastrophe, a damning new analysis has found.” With COP26 approaching, “none of the largest greenhouse gas emitting countries have made sufficient plans to lower pollution to meet what they agreed to in the 2015 Paris climate accord,” leaving the world “on track for 3C temperature increase if present trends continue.”

“The Trump Administration says Islamic State has been defeated, and it is moving ahead with its withdrawal of U.S. forces from Syria and reducing America’s antiterror commitments in Africa,” but the “world’s terrorists don’t seem to have received this news that they’ve been defeated, as a spate of recent attacks around the globe shows.”

Trump’s tweets “tell more of the ‘real story’ than he understands: the story of a president with few commitments to a pluralistic society, with little impulse control and who still remains distinct – and distant – from the office he holds.”
