Digital advertising has evolved greatly from the once ubiquitous pop-up ads, but advertisers still frequently lack a “reliable way” of judging the effectiveness of their ad spend. The reports rely on “trust me” technology whose inventors/providers have not been “audited, could not be audited frequently enough for it to be verifiable, or actually refused to be audited.”

“More than a third of Americans have listened to podcasts” while 15% loyally listen weekly. “Podcasts turned a corner in 2017, capturing the attention of more traditional platforms, like television, publishing and radio, who see podcasting as a way to grow audiences and to mine for stories.” Listeners respond at high rates to podcast advertising, which “is likely to expand in 2018, thanks to the proven effectiveness of the medium.”

The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) “will sell its entire book of hedge funds, including 24 direct interests and another six hedge-fund–of-fund stakes.” This could signal a sea change as other pension funds reevaluate the effectiveness of hedge funds, which have mushroomed to $3 trillion. “Last year on average, hedge funds returned 9 percent, which was 23.4 percentage points less than public market returns.”

“Antibiotics have transformed medicine and saved countless lives over the past seven decades. Now, rampant overuse and the lack of new drugs in the pipeline threatens to undermine their effectiveness.” The last new class of antibiotics emerged in 1987. Today both standard-treatment and last-resort antibiotics often fail due to growing resistance in germs and bacteria.
