Investment Week (July 31)

2023/ 07/ 31 by jd in Global News

“British American Tobacco is resisting shareholder pressure to move its primary listing from London to New York.” Others haven’t. “The London Stock Exchange has seen a string of departures this year, as companies flee from cheap valuations towards the deeper investor pool the US market offers.”

Investment Week (July 25)

2022/ 07/ 27 by jd in Global News

“Excluding investment companies and international companies whose London quote was secondary, 1,180 companies were listed on the LSE as of the last day of trading in May 2022, down from 1,349 in May 2019.” During the first half of 2022, “the number of companies floating on the LSE also fell drastically…with just 26 companies debuting, marking a 45% decline compared to the first half of 2021. The UK was not alone. Global IPO activity was poor, with the number of deals falling to 46%.”

Financial Times (January 8)

With a $3 trillion valuation, Apple “is worth more than the entire FTSE 100 index—highlighting the malaise of what was long one of the world’s leading stock markets.” In a decade and a half, the LSE’s “share of global equity values has fallen from 8.5 per cent to 3.6 per cent.”

The Economist (March 2)

The planned $30 billion merger between Deutsche Börse (DB) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) “had been billed as a bridge between Europe’s two main financial hubs.” In tatters, the merger now stands as “a symbol of their growing competition—and of the uncertainty into which Brexit has plunged the EU’s markets.”

Institutional Investor (July 4)

2016/ 07/ 05 by jd in Global News

Post-Brexit “uncertainty has smacked executives at the London Stock Exchange Group and Deutsche Börse in the face. Europe’s two leading exchange operators are pressing ahead with their proposed $30 billion merger even though the referendum result poses a huge and uncertain political risk to the deal’s completion.”

Institutional Investor (March 29)

“The LSE and Deutsche Börse have tried to merge twice before, but both attempts ended in acrimony.” This time looks different, but it’s still far from certain. “U.S. predators are lurking, with Atlanta-headquartered Intercontinental Exchange saying it’s considering an offer for LSE; there’s also talk that Chicago-based CME Group and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing could enter the fray and spark a global bidding war.”

Global Investor (February Issue)

“Initial public offerings (IPOs) in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region are gathering momentum, with a burgeoning pipeline of deals and renewed optimism of further supply stretching into the future.” Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul Exchange is predicted to be the region’s most active, followed by the Dubai Financial Market, Qatar Exchange and the Abu Dhabi Exchange. “However, some of these companies could look to the London Stock Exchange due to its wider access to international investors. The dearth of liquidity in regional compared with global exchanges remains a challenge for local IPOs.”

Wall Street Journal (August 19)

2011/ 08/ 21 by jd in Global News

“The financial world’s center of gravity is shifting east.” The latest event to show this shift is the planned listing of Manchester United on the Singapore Exchange. Taken private in 2005, Manchester United had been listed on the LSE for 15 years. The team’s IPO may raise $1 billion. This “major score for Singapore’s exchange” is also a “cold splash of capitalist reality—a reminder that no country or financial system can take its luster for granted.”
