With 13 days remaining in Trump’s presidency, “the best outcome would be for him to resign to spare the U.S. another impeachment fight.” Though impeachment could send a valuable “message to future Presidents that Congress will protect itself from populists of all ideological stripes willing to stir up a mob and threaten the Capitol or its Members.” Doing this “so late in the term” wouldn’t be “easy or without rancor…. It is best for everyone, himself included, if he goes away quietly.”

“Say it loud, say it clear: Donald Trump needs to resign over his handling of the coronavirus.” With about 4% of the world’s population, the U.S. has so far “had about one-third of all global coronavirus cases and one-quarter of the fatalities.” The “catastrophic failure” is largely due to President Trump. This is “not just the catalog of screw-ups…. It’s that Trump represents an ongoing danger to the health and well-being of the American people.”

“In one respect, we should be grateful for the president’s unhinged performance. No longer do we need to deliberate over his true character and beliefs. We can just give up the ghost and acknowledge, as a nation, that the president of the United States is a racist. Period. He doesn’t just sympathize with white supremacists and neo-Nazis, he agrees with them…. Every day that he remains president is a day that further diminishes our values, our basic decency, and our nation as a whole. The time has come for every American, regardless of their partisan affiliation, to demand that he relinquish his office.”

“Score one for public shaming. Following widespread outrage… Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf has said he’ll forfeit his outstanding stock awards of about $41 million.” That’s not enough. He should resign. “The public is worn out by Wall Street’s bad behavior — and it’s also tired of watching low-level employees be scapegoated while top executives get off scot-free.”
