New York Times (January 16)

2023/ 01/ 17 by jd in Global News

“Intent on reversing America’s decline in the world’s production of cutting-edge semiconductors, the federal government has begun what is arguably the government’s largest foray into the private sector since World War II.” This “more muscular approach to industrial policy” is “pockmarked with risks. On balance, the record of government trying to improve the functioning of the private sector is poor, and particularly in complex sectors like semiconductors, the challenges are great.”

Wall Street Journal (January 2)

2023/ 01/ 03 by jd in Global News

Citing “red flags” like housing market decline, the spend down of pandemic savings, and tighter bank lending standards, “more than two-thirds of the economists at 23 large financial institutions that do business directly with the Federal Reserve are betting the U.S. will have a recession in 2023. Two others are predicting a recession in 2024.”

Investment Week (October 12)

2022/ 10/ 14 by jd in Global News

Aside from shipping difficulties and “maritime headwinds” hitting China, “the property crisis, fuelled by debt defaults from property developers, has dented the likelihood of Chinese GDP hitting growth targets as local authority revenue takes a hit from land sale income decline. Sentiment has followed suit and many wonder when and where respite will arise.”

The Economist (September 18)

For years, digital advertising has been “largely impervious to the business cycle” and “dominated” by Google and Meta. These “verities” may be falling as companies tighten marketing budgets. “Until recently, that would have meant cutting non-digital ads but maintaining, or even raising, online spending. With most ad dollars now going online, that strategy is running out of road. Last quarter Meta reported its first-ever year-on-year decline in revenues. Snap, a smaller rival, is laying off a fifth of its workforce.”

Investment Week (July 25)

2022/ 07/ 27 by jd in Global News

“Excluding investment companies and international companies whose London quote was secondary, 1,180 companies were listed on the LSE as of the last day of trading in May 2022, down from 1,349 in May 2019.” During the first half of 2022, “the number of companies floating on the LSE also fell drastically…with just 26 companies debuting, marking a 45% decline compared to the first half of 2021. The UK was not alone. Global IPO activity was poor, with the number of deals falling to 46%.”

Bloomberg (March 13)

2022/ 03/ 15 by jd in Global News

“Trade’s share of global GDP peaked in 2008, and has been falling for the past decade. So the war in Ukraine doesn’t necessarily mark sharp a break in history. But it underlines and will perhaps cement the decline of globalization.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune (July 22)

2021/ 07/ 23 by jd in Global News

The 1.5 year decline in U.S. life expectancy “is the largest seen in a single year since World War II” and “reflects the pandemic’s sustained toll on Americans, particularly the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color,” where life expectancy fell nearly 3 years for blacks and Latinos.

New York Times (July 20)

2021/ 07/ 22 by jd in Global News

“One reason U.S. investors are nervous is the price of oil, which dropped nearly 8 percent on Monday. Rising oil prices had been seen as a sign of a strong global rebound. The sharp decline…suggests that the global demand for oil, and therefore economic activity, could be lower than thought.”

Time (June 23)

2021/ 06/ 24 by jd in Global News

“Life expectancy across the country plummeted by nearly two years from 2018 to 2020, the largest decline since 1943, when American troops were dying in World War II.” While life expectancy also dropped in many countries during the same period, “the average loss of life expectancy in the U.S. was nearly nine times greater than the average in 16 other developed nations, whose residents can now expect to live 4.7 years longer than Americans.”

LA Times (June 14)

2021/ 06/ 16 by jd in Global News

“The chances of getting COVID-19 will not be zero anytime soon—even for vaccinated people. So, for all of us to comfortably return to in-person work, send our kids to school and abandon our masks, we will have to rely on multiple lines of trust…. Unfortunately, Americans’ willingness to trust one another was already in decline before the pandemic began.”
