Washington Post (March 17)

2022/ 03/ 18 by jd in Global News

In terms of seizing Ukraine, “the extent of Putin’s failure is breathtaking.” He has, however, successfully “unified the West, prompted NATO to beef up its military spending, kick-started a resurgence of pro-democratic sentiments… and made himself the poster boy for war crimes.… Meanwhile, Russia’s economy is in shambles, losing decades of progress and perhaps permanently damaging the country’s energy markets.”

Foreign Policy (March 10)

2022/ 03/ 12 by jd in Global News

“Putin’s war could save the global economic order. In this crisis, Western countries have shaken off decades of economic policy lethargy.” Though “the short-term economic costs will be steep, the conflict might end up being the savior of the global economic order.”

Wall Street Journal (March 7)

2022/ 03/ 08 by jd in Global News

“Oil and gas revenue makes up about half of the Kremlin’s budget and is critical to financing Vladimir Putin’s bloody war on Ukraine.” The trouble is “sanctions on Russian energy could also harm the world economy and especially Europe,” which depends on Russia for a quarter of its oil and 40% of its natural gas. “Unless the West is willing to grasp this nettle, the world will continue to finance the Putin war machine.”

Wall Street Journal (March 3)

2022/ 03/ 04 by jd in Global News

“How in the world did Europe leave itself so vulnerable to Vladimir Putin’s energy extortion?” Less than two decades ago, EU nations “produced more gas than Russia exported. Yet European production has plunged by more than half over the last decade” while Russia “happily filled the supply gap.”

The Guardian (February 24)

2022/ 02/ 26 by jd in Global News

“The west stood back and watched in Syria – it must not do the same in Ukraine…. It’s time for the US and its allies to show their steel in the face of Putin’s aggression. We have learned that nothing else will work.”

The Economist (February 19)

2022/ 02/ 21 by jd in Global News

“With the candour that has wrong-footed Mr Putin, many Western security officials accused him of lying, redoubling their warnings of a looming Russian invasion. Even if the troops pull back, this crisis is not yet over. And, whatever happens, war or no war, Mr Putin has damaged his country by engineering it.”

The Guardian (January 23)

2022/ 01/ 23 by jd in Global News

Vladimir Putin “fits the rogue male profile to a T – unscrupulous, vicious, cunning, and ever ready to trample on other people and countries.” That, not strategy, is the key to understanding his desire to invade Ukraine. “The world has been here before, many times. One screwed-up little man must not be allowed to start a war no one wants.”

Reuters (February 8)

2019/ 02/ 10 by jd in Global News

“With his ratings down and state funds needed to hedge against new Western sanctions and raise living standards, Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot afford to get sucked into a costly nuclear arms race with the United States.” The tell could be seen after Donald Trump pulled out of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF). Putin indicated Russia would do the same thing, but he “did not up the ante.”

Bloomberg (December 28)

2018/ 12/ 29 by jd in Global News

“Who is the most important and disruptive leader in the world today? Most Americans would probably answer, Donald Trump—with Russia’s Vladimir Putin running a close second.” There is, however “a strong case that China’s Xi Jinping may deserve the title.”

Washington Post (July 24)

Somehow Trump’s appeal keeps rising. “His support within the Republican Party has risen and solidified. It now stands at around 90 percent, which is what tin-pot dictators get in rigged elections.” This leaves many befuddled, but his trick is telling people what they already believe. Playing to prejudice is Trump’s appeal. “He validates the thinking—some of it ugly—of many Americans. To them, Helsinki doesn’t matter and even Putin doesn’t matter. Only Trump does. To them, he hates the right people.”
