“Falling rate of COVID-19 across the United States mask a harsh reality—the overwhelming majority of those getting sick and being hospitalized today are unvaccinated, while vaccinated people are becoming rare.” The sickest patients are also more likely to be younger “as older people are much more likely to be vaccinated.”

“Ohio experienced a decrease in the mortality rate for the coronavirus over the past three months” as more new infections are attributed to young people. That’s not the only reason, however, as the mortality rate for those over 60 has dropped from 23% in April to 7.4% in June. Factors likely include “earlier testing for the virus and steroid treatments that have helped hospitalized patients.”

“Each day three or four children under age 17 die and an additional 16 are hospitalized from a single cause: gunfire. In fact… gun violence is the third leading cause of death for American kids between ages 1 and 17, and the second leading cause of injury-related deaths after motor vehicle accidents.” It is “the nation’s shame” that “we know it’s a problem…. We know steps can be taken to address it. But we don’t take them.”
