Reuters (August 10)

2022/ 08/ 11 by jd in Global News

“What a difference a year makes: Consumers have gotten off the couch…. There is evidence that the streaming market has hit a saturation point. Netflix lost 1.3 million American and Canadian customers in the second quarter, where it enjoys the highest average revenue per user.”

The Economist (April 25)

2020/ 04/ 28 by jd in Global News

“The BBC is having a good pandemic, but the loss of young audiences poses a mortal threat to its funding.” Viewing by 16- to 24-year-olds is just 85 minutes versus the nearly 6 hours watched daily by those over 65. “Those aged 16-24 spend more time on YouTube than live TV” while “the next generation should terrify them. Children aged 12-15 are more likely to have heard of Netflix than the BBC.”

Bloomberg (September 17)

2019/ 09/ 19 by jd in Global News

Global investors have “sold $4.5 billion of Indian shares since June, on course for the biggest quarterly exodus since at least 1999.” That’s roughly a tenth of their total investment during the previous six years. “India’s economic growth has decelerated for five straight quarters.” India could now experience “a structural slowdown that pummels the country’s $2 trillion stock market, throws a wrench into growth plans of international companies from Amazon.com Inc. to Netflix Inc.,” and diminishes job prospects “for the millions of young Indians who enter the workforce every year.”

Market Watch (July 31)

2018/ 08/ 02 by jd in Global News

“Both Facebook and Netflix saw their shares fall into bear-market territory on Monday, defined by a decline of at least 20% from a recent peak, and nearly 40% of the S&P 500’s technology sector is in correction territory.” Some say there’s been a seismic shift, but “it remains to be seen if the recent moves represent a sea change for a reemergence for value, which has been overshadowed by growth plays, or if moves of the past few days are a blip.”

The Economist (June 30)

2018/ 07/ 02 by jd in Global News

Netflix content now “consumes 20% of the world’s downstream bandwidth.” Once a DVD rental service, Netflix has become “the world’s first global TV powerhouse. This year its entertainment output will far exceed that of any TV network; its production of over 80 feature films is far larger than any Hollywood studio’s.” Netflix plans to spend an additional $3 to $4 billion on content this year. “That extra spending alone would be enough to pay for all of HBO’s programming—or the BBC’s.”

U.S. News & World Report (February 6)

2017/ 02/ 06 by jd in Global News

“A report published last year stated that more than 37 percent of workers in Silicon Valley are foreign-born.” Not surprisingly, given that, “a group of nearly 100 tech companies have filed an amicus brief to a federal appeals court voicing concerns over President Donald Trump’s stalled immigration-focused executive order.” Among them were “Google, Apple, GoPro, Facebook, Dropbox, eBay, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Netflix and Twitter.”

Wall Street Journal (May 26)

2016/ 05/ 28 by jd in Global News

“The European Commission wants to apply local-content quotas to streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime’s video offering.” They might also impose other restrictions and taxes. This is the wrong principle. “Brussels is showing that its main concern whenever a new technology comes along will be how to hobble it with the same overregulation that afflicts old technologies.”
