Last year “Californians responded initially with big water savings but let the hoses and sprinklers run again toward the end of last year, as the Sierra snow began to fall and it was easier to hope — to pretend — that the dry times were behind us. It’s clear now that’s not the case.” With the drought in its fourth year, “Californians must begin using water as though they are still at the front end of…cataclysm.”

“From Maine to Connecticut, snowbound New Englanders began the back-breaking job of digging out from as much as 3 feet of powder yesterday.” Heavy snow and gusty winds from blizzard Nemo left about 650,000 homes without power. New York City was spared the worst of the storm. A few places set snowfall records, among them Portland, Maine with 31.9 inches.
Chicago Sun Times (February 3)
Chicago came to a standstill. A massive blizzard struck closing streets, schools and businesses. All told, 20.2 inches of snow fell, making it “the third worst snowstorm on record, behind only blizzards in 1967 — when 23 inches blanketed the city — and 1999 — when 21.6 inches fell.”
