USA Today (May 8)

“This week about 800 former federal prosecutors (so far) have signed a letter objecting to Attorney General William Barr’s declaration that special counsel Robert Mueller’s report did not support charges that President Donald Trump obstructed justice.” In their view, the President’s conduct “would, in the case of any other person … result in multiple felony charges for obstruction of justice.”

Washington Post (April 18)

“The report of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III is not what the American public had been led to expect.” As a next step, “the House Judiciary Committee must hear directly from Mr. Mueller.” They also need access to the complete, unredacted report. Ultimately, lawmakers will “face a difficult balancing act between the many valid reasons to regard impeachment as a last resort, and their responsibility to ensure that no one is above the law.”

“The end of the special counsel’s probe gives Donald Trump one of the biggest wins of his presidency…. A special-counsel investigation of this ilk might have proven fatal to Trump’s predecessors, yet the President survived it.” Still, “Mueller’s verdict was not nearly as definitive as the President and his allies would claim. He did not clear Trump of obstruction.”

Chicago Tribune (June 15)

“Donald Trump should be extremely worried about his presidency.” It’s easy to see why he “is still ruminating about firing Mueller,” the special counsel, even though that “would be politically disastrous, fueling impeachment fever…. His presidency is imperiled so long as Mueller compels witnesses to testify, accumulates written evidence and traces the myriad of ties between the Trump team and Russians.”
