Itochu’s unconventional “tough love worked.” A decade after banning overtime after 8:00 PM, profit per employee has increased fivefold. “What also changed, to the surprise of Itochu’s management, is that more female employees took maternity leave, had kids and came back to work.” This raises the question, “could similar changes help East Asia’s flagging birthrate?”

“The issues in Tuesday’s election for mayor of Chicago are perennials: teetering city finances, gun violence, public schools, City Hall corruption. Either finalist, Lori Lightfoot or Toni Preckwinkle, would be a capable mayor. But let’s pause to celebrate that whoever next leads the city will be unique: Chicago’s first African-American female mayor.”

Age discrimination may be “more prevalent in Silicon Valley than either gender or race discrimination,” at least in the eyes of the average founder, who is largely white and male. “A new survey from First Round Capital shows that “two-thirds of male founders think their companies are inclusive environments for parents, but just one-third of female founders agree.”

“Hillary Clinton would make a sober, smart and pragmatic president. Donald Trump would be a catastrophe.” Electing the first female U.S. president “would surely be as exhilarating as it is long overdue…. But that’s not the chief reason to vote for her. She deserves America’s support because she is the overwhelmingly better candidate.”

Comparisons are being made between Margaret Thatcher, the UK’s first female Prime Minister, and Theresa May, its second. Both entered office at inopportune times, but there are differences as well. “Unlike Thatcher, May lacks charisma. Indeed, she is rather dull but at least she is competent. In the age of Donald Trump, charisma appears to have lost its luster. In these turbulent times, May is ideally placed to take over from David Cameron.”
