“The Biden administration said this week the U.S will quadruple tariffs on Chinese EVs in a move aimed at protecting American workers and businesses from unfair Chinese trade practices.” Some think this will provide a lifeline, but at least one auto industry executive believes “the increase won’t help the long-term staying power of the industry or its jobs.” Instead, the “capitulation to the status quo” will “condemn” the U.S. auto industry “to a slow but certain death” as the rest of the industry moves “toward technology that doesn’t rely on oil.”

“When depositors began pulling money out of Silvergate Capital Corp. following the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, the California bank shored up its liquidity by tapping a quasi-government agency not typically known as a lender of last resort.” The $4.3 billion lifeline that “Silvergate got from the Home Loan Bank System shows one way in which the crypto industry has managed to find its way into the mainstream banking system.”

But throwing a lifeline is pointless until the victim realizes he may be drowning. It’s not clear the Republicans have reached that point. Detroit became the largest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy, hoping to escape nearly $20 billion in debt. “The word bankruptcy provokes an intense emotional response. Instinctively, many Detroiters feel the news is horrible and is synonymous with defeat. Fear kicks in as we envision our city being shut down and sold for scrap…. In fact, it is the exact lifeline we need to unshackle our town from the mismanagement, corruption and incompetence of the past in order to get on with the real work of rebuilding Detroit.”
