The fires ravaging Evia, Greece’s second-largest island “seem less a random act of God than another inevitable episode of Europe’s extreme weather brought on by the man-made climate change that scientists have now concluded is irreversible.”

“Sea surface temperatures have risen globally in recent years as a result of man-made climate change,” but not uniformly. Though more hurricanes are being spawned in the middle of the Atlantic, temperatures along the U.S. coast “have remained relatively cool,” providing protection. Many storms “hit Caribbean islands hard but leave the U.S. largely unscathed.” Alas, the favorable “surface temperatures that protect the U.S. could easily disappear.”

They seem to make the case that we’re inexplicably intent on engineering our own expulsion from the garden, in a kind of late-breaking, self-inflicted Old Testament dismissal… Having dodged the bullet of cold war nuclear annihilation, we face a new threat just as global, man-made and potentially lethal. A sense of emergency is what is urgently needed.”
