The modern digital revolution “is disrupting and dividing the world of work on a scale not seen for more than a century. Vast wealth is being created without many workers; and for all but an elite few, work no longer guarantees a rising income.” The revolution has brought many benefits and has many more to offer, but a bold government response is necessary to ensure workers will be able to benefit from the digital revolution.

“For all the wonders of the digital revolution, there is a turbulent and largely hidden underside of theft and disruption that grows by the day; the losses are often not counted in stacks of $20 bills but rather in millions of dollars of intellectual property stolen or compromised. Computer networks are vital to American capitalism and society but remain surprisingly vulnerable to hijack and hijinks.” More worryingly, the electric grid and much of the public infrastructure is also vulnerable. The U.S. needs to “erect better defenses” against cyberattack.

The digital revolution “could mean lights out for many of the nation’s 368 surviving drive-ins.” At their peak, over 4,000 drive-ins accounted for a quarter of U.S. movie screens. Today, it’s less than 2% and the future does not look bright. Due to cost, “Hollywood is expected to stop distributing 35-millimeter film prints to all U.S. theaters later this year.” That would save studios about $1,300 on making and shipping each 35-mm print, but going digital cost theaters money. Most indoor theaters “have already converted to digital projectors, but 90% of drive-ins have not, according to an industry trade group. Conversion costs of $70,000 or more per screen could be too expensive for many drive-ins.”
