“Companies and government agencies have been added in recent days to the list of institutions victimized by a supply chain cyberattack by a ransomware gang that exploited a weakness in file transfer software popular with enterprises.” Cl0p, a ransomware gang, “started exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in Progress Software’s product MoveIt to steal data from at least 91 organizations, including state and federal agencies and at least 10 U.S. banks and credit unions. Data compromised in the leaks included names, addresses, birthdates, Social Security numbers and more.”

“To get a taste for the havoc possible in today’s digital world, consider the recent cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment.” The massive 100 terabytes of stolen data has revealed “embarrassing details about executive salaries and secret movie negotiations—but the hack is also a worrisome moment in cybersecurity…. It is now a fact that many of the world’s most powerful nations are building cyberforces, either directly or with mercenary proxies. This is creating a cyberspace with plenty of risks.”

“For all the wonders of the digital revolution, there is a turbulent and largely hidden underside of theft and disruption that grows by the day; the losses are often not counted in stacks of $20 bills but rather in millions of dollars of intellectual property stolen or compromised. Computer networks are vital to American capitalism and society but remain surprisingly vulnerable to hijack and hijinks.” More worryingly, the electric grid and much of the public infrastructure is also vulnerable. The U.S. needs to “erect better defenses” against cyberattack.

Lurid Downloader “has been systematically and silently stealing data from carefully targeted government computers in 61 countries.” Advanced persistent threats (APTs), such as Lurid Downloader, are “the latest trend in cyberattacks.” Because the Internet was designed to be open, it is now creating massive risk as so much vital infrastructure and communication depends on it. “As modern society leans ever more heavily on the Internet…, its fragility becomes an ever greater concern.” Unfortunately, the “only answer to the persistent problem of malware may be to rebuild the Internet from scratch.”
