New York Times (December 25)

2015/ 12/ 26 by jd in Global News

“Evil is everywhere, and anger and hatred are loud. The shouting drowns out the quiet; tragedy and disaster block the view of the good. Yet there are always signs of progress toward a better future. Look, or you may miss them.”

Financial Times (September 7)

2015/ 09/ 07 by jd in Global News

Now nearing $500 billion a year, “stock buybacks are big and controversial.” Some claim buybacks are “killing the American economy…. Fine companies, the idea runs, sacrifice their future to satisfy cash-hungry hedge funds.” This is overblown. “Buybacks do not destroy the cash used. The cash goes to stockholders—often pension funds or mutual funds—that reinvest it, presumably in younger firms that are cash-starved and hungry to expand.”

Washington Post (November 10)

2014/ 11/ 11 by jd in Global News

“The Federal Reserve has ended its roughly $3.7 trillion program of bond buying, leaving in its wake a host of hard questions. Did it strengthen the economic recovery? If so, by how much? What are the long-run effects? Should it be used again? We don’t have good answers.” Without more rigorous research, we won’t know whether or in what circumstances quantitative easing should be deployed in the future.

The Scotsman (September 18)

2014/ 09/ 19 by jd in Global News

“The people of Scotland will go to the polls in record numbers today.” They will decide “the future of Scotland and that of the 307-year-old United Kingdom.” This will be “the most important vote in the country’s history.”

The Economist (August 2)

2014/ 08/ 03 by jd in Global News

Israel is “winning the battle, losing the war. For all its military might, Israel faces a grim future unless it can secure peace” and it is slipping in the international court of public opinion.

The Economist (June 21)

2014/ 06/ 22 by jd in Global News

“Since time immemorial, Chinese children have been expected to take care of their aged parents—but rising incomes and shifting norms are changing things.” Retirement homes, some quite stylish, may prove the wave of the future in China.

Financial Times (April 22)

2014/ 04/ 23 by jd in Global News

“The US-Japan relationship has been the bedrock of Asian security but some see it as the remnant of a bygone era.” President Obama’s state visit to Japan comes at a “pivotal time” and could help determine the future of the alliance.

New York Times (April 21)

2014/ 04/ 22 by jd in Global News

President Obama’s trip should provide opportunity to explain that America’s strategic tilt toward Asia does not mean the U.S. will abandon the rest of the world. “A volatile and chaotic world will continue to demand America’s attention, but Asia is the future and warrants being a top priority.”

The Economist (April 19)

2014/ 04/ 20 by jd in Global News

Coal is a “cheap, ubiquitous and flexible fuel” that will be “the fuel of the future, unfortunately.” Although it remains very dirty, coal “offers the best chance for poor countries wanting to get rich” and even for some rich countries, like Japan and Germany, seeking nuclear alternatives.

New York Times (April 6)

2014/ 04/ 07 by jd in Global News

“In reality, slower population growth creates enormous possibilities for human flourishing.” Japan may be at the forefront of graying societies, but the nation is hardly alone. Most developed countries are already shrinking. Many developing countries, like China, are soon forecast to contract. This is fueling “dark prophecies” and causing alarm over the future. It shouldn’t. “Population doom of one kind or another is a recurring fad. Like most fads, this one can be safely ignored. Humanity has many legitimate problems to worry about. Falling fertility is not one of them.”
