Weekly new Covid cases rose alarmingly in the UK from 116,000 to 224,000 leaving the UK perched “at a ‘tipping point’ in the Covid-19 crisis.” Only swift action will “avoid history ‘repeating itself’” according to deputy chief medical officer, Jonathan Van-Tam” whose “stark warning” emphasized that “the worst is yet to come if we do not ‘all act now’… and that the approach of winter made the situation even more grave.”

In the U.S., “freakishly mild meteorological conditions this winter gave a major boost to the economy, which otherwise would likely have contracted in the first quarter. Moreover, the weather has set investors up for a shock.” With a return to the recessionary trend likely during the second quarter, there will be “exaggerated drops from the weather-boosted first-quarter figures.”

“Energy politics underlie the explosive Ukraine crisis, as Europeans weigh U.S. calls for tougher sanctions against the ability of Russia to disrupt gas supplies this winter.” Despite the roll out of stronger penalties by Washington, the Europeans were dragging their feet, “a sign that many of its governments fear Moscow’s energy leverage more than U.S. displeasure.” With the downing of the Malaysian Airlines flight, Europe may finally be forced to react and Europeans “may be facing a cold winter.”
