The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc) “was already known to be at its weakest in 1,600 years as a result of the climate crisis.” Scientists believe its collapse would be catastrophic, but previous studies showed this was unlikely before 2100. Newer studies, with an extended horizon, are troubling. They “show the tipping point that makes an Amoc shutdown inevitable is likely to be passed within a few decades, but that the collapse itself may not happen until 50 to 100 years later.”

“The world’s oceans experienced a staggering amount of warming in 2023, as vast marine heat waves affected 96% of their surface, breaking records for intensity, longevity and scale…. That could mark a turning point in the way the oceans behave, potentially signaling a tipping point after which average sea temperatures will be reset higher and some ecosystems may not recover.”

Wired (January 16)
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is suing John Deere and this could mark “a tipping point for right-to-repair.” Deere has prevented farmers and third-party mechanics from making repairs by placing “limitations on its operational software, meaning certain features and calibrations on its tractors can only be unlocked by mechanics who have the right digital key.” Following “years of complaints” about these policies, repairability advocates see the FTC’s suit as “a milestone for consumer rights.”

“Japan is the first nation to experience a demographic tipping point where more than twenty per cent of the population is over sixty-five years old.” This magnifies the effects of climate change. Hot summer weather in Tokyo now lasts “some fifty days longer in recent years as compared with the twentieth century.” The additional “heat has proven a silent killer of these older citizens. Thirteen hundred people die of heatstroke annually in the country, the majority of them elderly.”

Weekly new Covid cases rose alarmingly in the UK from 116,000 to 224,000 leaving the UK perched “at a ‘tipping point’ in the Covid-19 crisis.” Only swift action will “avoid history ‘repeating itself’” according to deputy chief medical officer, Jonathan Van-Tam” whose “stark warning” emphasized that “the worst is yet to come if we do not ‘all act now’… and that the approach of winter made the situation even more grave.”

“The Republican Party is full of people with no delusions about what an abominable president Trump is, but who see abandoning him as career suicide.” But a flood of defections may be nearing as they look for “a tipping point in their state or district when continuing to support Trump will become more politically risky than abandoning him. One-third of these refugees and migrants are sheltering in Colombia, which has maintained a very generous open-door policy,” but is showing signs of being overwhelmed. Colombia “indeed appears headed towards a tipping point. Such an outcome would exacerbate the regional humanitarian crisis triggered by Venezuela’s collapse.”

Although it requires more coding, “it offers a whole range of other prioritizing features on mobile that customers crave versus receiving a shallow, shrunk-down version of the desktop site that leaves too much to be desired.”
