“The response by pension schemes and other investors to the invasion was immediate and, in the days following Russia’s attack, a number of pension schemes announced they would reduce or sell all their holdings as soon as possible.” Exposure to Russia varied by scheme, but was low overall, at around “0.1% for many schemes, holdings that many managers have written down to zero.” All in all, the “market reaction to the crisis was surprisingly muted,” with fairly stable funding levels throughout the crisis.

“Though understandable,” the knee-jerk reaction following the Fukushima disaster “was wrong.” Nuclear power has numerous drawbacks, but “well-regulated nuclear power is safe” and essential given the climate crisis. Nuclear provides constant generating capacity to support a reliable grid. Furthermore, “nuclear provides such capacity with no ongoing emissions, and it is doing so safely and at scale around the world.”

For some it may come fairly soon, since his disastrous failure to control the pandemic has now been followed by a widely condemned reaction to the protests against police brutality.”

When then Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke signaled a potential policy change in 2013, he “triggered a ‘taper tantrum’ in financial markets across the world” and “put a chill on the US housing market.” Current Fed Chairman Janet Yellen “is determined not to do the same and catch the markets unaware.” Judging from the calm market reaction to her recent guidance, she is earning “high marks” for successfully managing expectations.
