Washington Examiner (August 2)

“Yellow Freight, one of the oldest trucking companies in America…hit the end of the road Friday” when both union and nonunion workers were laid off. A bankruptcy filing appears imminent. “While the Teamsters-UPS agreement to avert a strike has lessened what could have been a disastrous economic event, Yellow’s potential insolvency marks one of the biggest collapses in jobs in the U.S. trucking industry” and could still lead to “economic uncertainty.”

Wall Street Journal (April 14)

“Events in Hong Kong and Shanghai have demonstrated that a ‘zero Covid’ strategy can look very effective for a long time—until suddenly it isn’t, either because a more infectious variant changes the game or because success itself breeds overconfidence.” Unless the Chinese government moves “quickly to vaccinate and boost its elderly, and start spending much more heavily on hospital capacity, then the human and economic consequences could be disastrous.”

Washington Post (June 5)

“The Republican Party is full of people with no delusions about what an abominable president Trump is, but who see abandoning him as career suicide.” But a flood of defections may be nearing as they look for “a tipping point in their state or district when continuing to support Trump will become more politically risky than abandoning him. For some it may come fairly soon, since his disastrous failure to control the pandemic has now been followed by a widely condemned reaction to the protests against police brutality.”

The Guardian (March 19)

“As the disastrous impact of leaving the EU becomes clearer, UK citizens should be allowed another say.” Some forecasts estimate that it will take “at least 20 years before the UK economy stabilises after Brexit.” And the London School of Economics “found that all EU countries will lose income after Brexit. The overall GDP fall in the UK is estimated at between £26bn and £55bn, depending on the negotiated settlement. In the most pessimistic scenario, the cost of Brexit could be as high as £6,400 for each household.”

Chicago Tribune (June 15)

“Donald Trump should be extremely worried about his presidency.” It’s easy to see why he “is still ruminating about firing Mueller,” the special counsel, even though that “would be politically disastrous, fueling impeachment fever…. His presidency is imperiled so long as Mueller compels witnesses to testify, accumulates written evidence and traces the myriad of ties between the Trump team and Russians.”

Reuters (June 9)

“Despite her dramatic electoral upset, British Prime Minister Theresa May appears determined to stay in office. In the short term, she could yet manage it. But the longer-term consequences may well be disastrous for her country.”

Newsweek (March 27)

2017/ 03/ 27 by jd in Global News

“By almost any measure, last week was a disastrous week for President Donald Trump. Truth seemed to be catching up with the president, but he hasn’t fessed up. Trump’s “disconnection from the truth continues apace…. At this point it’s still a race to see how long the public and dogged reporters will have the energy to keep up at this pace.”

National Geographic (August 29)

While much focus is on surging tension with China, “another less publicized, also potentially disastrous, threat looms in the South China Sea: overfishing. This is one of the world’s most important fisheries, employing more than 3.7 million people and bringing in billions of dollars every year. But after decades of free-for-all fishing, dwindling stocks now threaten both the food security and economic growth of the rapidly developing nations that draw on them.”

The Economist (May 7)

2016/ 05/ 08 by jd in Global News

“It is now clear that Republicans will be led into the presidential election by a candidate who said he would kill the families of terrorists, has encouraged violence by his supporters, has a weakness for wild conspiracy theories and subscribes to a set of protectionist and economically illiterate policies that are by turns fantastical and self-harming.” Somehow, Donald Trump now has a chance to win the presidency. “The result could be disastrous for the Republican Party and, more important, for America.”
