Chicago Tribune (January 3)

“Chicago-area hospitals are postponing many elective surgeries, as Illinois on Sunday set a record for COVID-19 hospitalizations…. Statewide, there were 6,294 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, surpassing the previous peak of 6,175 on Nov. 20, 2020.” In addition to the influx of COVID-19 patients, hospitals are struggling with “industrywide staffing shortages” worsened by staff testing positive to breakthrough infections.

USA Today (November 30)

“People are in for an anxious couple of weeks as data is collected, patient records are scoured, hospitalizations are tracked and blood samples are tested. Only then will we know whether this is another delta variant, fast-moving and highly contagious, or something like a gamma, which appeared, sputtered out and quickly disappeared.”

Houston Chronicle (July 27)

“The fourth COVID-19 wave is like a sequel to a movie that no one ever wanted to watch in the first place…. Last week, the number of lab-confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide broke 4,000 for the first time since March” while Greater Houston is seeing over 1,000 people “testing positive per day…more than seven times last month’s daily average.”

Tampa Bay Times (April 5)

“Physical distancing and masks are being credited for a decline in common viruses.” Pediatric hospitalizations for respiratory illness are down 62% while only a single child has died of the flu, an illness that usually claims the lives of 100 – 200 children per season in the U.S. Beyond masks and physical distancing, other pandemic factors also play a role. “It’s become a serious societal faux pas to go anywhere with a fever – so parents don’t send their ailing kids to school.”

USA Today (March 31)

“As coronavirus cases creep up again across the country, federal officials and epidemiologists say they’re worried Americans could hit another tipping point, leading to a forth significant surge of infections, hospitalizations and deaths.”

Seattle Times (February 9)

2021/ 02/ 10 by jd in Global News

“The prospect of a fourth wave propelled by new variants is something many scientists and modeling groups are warning about.” For example, the University of Washington now forecasts “an additional 200,000 deaths nationwide through June 1.” There is “one bright spot… hospitalizations and death rates are likely to be lower during any fourth wave than in previous surges because many older people are getting vaccinated.”

Washington Post (December 28)

2020/ 12/ 29 by jd in Global News

“Despite weeks of increases in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, U.S. air travel hit a pandemic record this weekend as Americans crisscrossed the country for the holidays — a sign, some public health experts warn, that yet another surge could be on the horizon.”

San Francisco Chronicle (December 1)

2020/ 12/ 02 by jd in Global News

“California reported a record number of COVID-19 hospitalizations, reaching a somber milestone that shows the virus is more widespread than ever…. Hospitalizations in California have more than doubled in two weeks” and fears are mounting that “facilities could be overwhelmed.”

Washington Post (October 26)

2020/ 10/ 27 by jd in Global News

“The coronavirus pandemic numbers have been going the wrong direction for more than a month, topping 80,000 newly confirmed infections daily across the country, with hospitalizations rising in more than three dozen states and deaths creeping upward. Now, the United States is barreling toward another inflection point: a holiday season dictated by the calendar and demanded by tradition.”

Washington Post (June 29)

2020/ 06/ 29 by jd in Global News

“The road to a successful reopening of the U.S. economy is strewn with hopeful intentions — and formidable obstacles. The biggest and most important obstacle is a surge in new coronavirus cases, which presumably will lead to more hospitalizations and more deaths as well as more firms shutting down.”
