The Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc) “was already known to be at its weakest in 1,600 years as a result of the climate crisis.” Scientists believe its collapse would be catastrophic, but previous studies showed this was unlikely before 2100. Newer studies, with an extended horizon, are troubling. They “show the tipping point that makes an Amoc shutdown inevitable is likely to be passed within a few decades, but that the collapse itself may not happen until 50 to 100 years later.”

The Guardian (May 25)
Recent research suggests “that even if carbon emissions are slashed to meet the internationally agreed target of 1.5C, sea level rises will become unmanageable during this century.” The “more ominous” fact, however, is “that even the existing 1.5C goal is moving out of reach.” Globally we are on course for “at least 2.5C of heating,” likely melting “the Greenland and west Antarctic ice sheets” and triggering “‘really dire’ sea level rise of around 12 metres.” Still, we are not helpless. “People will adapt to sea level rises in the future as they have in the past. This is not to deny or underplay the scale of the threat, but to stress the importance of preparing for changes which are now inevitable, as well as trying as hard as possible to avoid the worst-case scenarios.”

Barron’s (January 3)
“Of all the fearless forecasts put out there for the new year, one conspicuously missing from those lists is probably the easiest one: The United States of America will lose its last remaining triple-A credit rating.” Standard & Poor’s was the first to lower its rating on U.S. government debt in 2011. In 2023, “Fitch Ratings followed suit.” That November, Moody’s Investors Service “lowered its outlook to negative.” It seems inevitable, especially given Trump’s desire for tax cuts, that Moody’s will eventually lower its Aaa rating as well. “Given the lack of serious measures, so far, to slow the government debt growth, the U.S.A. doesn’t merit a triple-A rating.”

Not long ago it seemed that an American recession was inevitable.” Now, expectations are heady that this can be averted, but “the surge of hope is… unusual because the world economy is slowing down.” While “falling inflation is good news,” it remains “too early to hail a ‘soft landing.’”

“The Arctic is transforming more rapidly than anywhere else on Earth, with temperatures rising at twice the rate seen elsewhere.… Nobody can be certain when the Arctic sea ice will be gone, but scientists agree that we are on a precarious downward spiral. The loss of nearly all Arctic sea ice in late summer seems inevitable, and an ice-free Arctic Ocean will probably arrive within decades, if not sooner.”

“Following a string of remarkable discoveries over the past two decades, the idea of alien life is not as far-fetched as it used to seem.” Amino acids “have been found in the tails of comets. There are other organic compounds in Martian soil.” And since the first habitable planet was discovered in 1995, “astronomers have catalogued thousands.” Discovery of alien life, “now seems inevitable.”

“China has mismanaged an epidemic of African swine fever that’s on course to kill 130 million pigs—or roughly one-third of China’s herd, the biggest in the world.” The response has taken the pattern of past mismanaged crisis and shows that China remains “systemically unprepared…to report and manage the inevitable next epidemic that kills people.”
