New Yorker (August 28)

2023/ 08/ 28 by jd in Global News

“Japan is the first nation to experience a demographic tipping point where more than twenty per cent of the population is over sixty-five years old.” This magnifies the effects of climate change. Hot summer weather in Tokyo now lasts “some fifty days longer in recent years as compared with the twentieth century.” The additional “heat has proven a silent killer of these older citizens. Thirteen hundred people die of heatstroke annually in the country, the majority of them elderly.”

Washington Post (August 3)

2023/ 08/ 05 by jd in Global News

“The world just got its first real taste of what life is like at 1.5 degrees Celsius.” July was far and away the hottest month ever recorded. Previously, “the world had briefly passed over 1.5 degrees for a few times” but always during the Northern Hemisphere’s winter, which muted “impacts on the largest population centers. This was the first month where temperatures were that far above preindustrial levels and most of the world’s population was under hot, summer conditions.”

Washington Post (June 25)

2022/ 06/ 27 by jd in Global News

“In a blistering hot June around the Northern Hemisphere, in which heat records have fallen on every continent, Japan is the latest to swelter. On Saturday, temperatures there shot above 104 degrees (40 Celsius) for the first time on record during the month, another clear sign of the sweeping effects of human-caused climate change.”

Moscow Times (August 9)

2021/ 08/ 11 by jd in Global News

“Smoke from wildfires burning across Russia’s largest and coldest region has reached the North Pole for what is believed to be the first time in known history.” The forest fires have been “fueled by hot weather and a 150-year record drought” and “already emitted a record 505 megatons of carbon dioxide.”

Los Angeles Times (August 16)

2018/ 08/ 18 by jd in Global News

“The largest fire in California history continued to grow Thursday while firefighters worked to protect threatened communities…. Conditions have been ripe for the erratic fire behavior that has led to the explosive growth of the Ranch fire, which along with the River fire makes up the 364,145-acre Mendocino Complex fire. The days are so hot and dry that whatever gains firefighters see overnight when the humidity goes up quickly fade when the sun hits the fuels and sucks the moisture out.”

The Economist (February 10)

2018/ 02/ 12 by jd in Global News

“America’s extraordinary economic gamble” is off to a rough start. “Fiscal policy is adding to demand even as the economy is running hot” and, seemingly as a result, volatility is back in a big way. “A long spell of calm, in which America’s stockmarket rose steadily without a big sell-off, ended abruptly this week.”

Los Angeles Times (January 20)

2016/ 01/ 21 by jd in Global News

“2015 was Earth’s hottest year on record, and it appears the planet is still getting hotter.” If the planet conforms with 2016 forecast from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, it will “mark the first time the average global temperature reached record-breaking heights for three consecutive years.”
