CNN (August 14)

“Nuclear power plants idled. Crops harvested at 3 a.m. Iconic tourist attractions shuttered early. Soaring temperatures are forcing drastic measures in Europe, where successive heatwaves are straining an economy already under pressure from US tariffs, Chinese competition and higher energy prices because of the Iran war.”

The Economist (July 18)

“It is too darn hot. On July 14th the surface temperature of Earth’s tropical and mid-latitude oceans was higher than on any other July 14th in modern records. The same was true for every other day in July, and for almost all of the days in June, too. Europe has gone through three heatwaves since May, and though the continent is better prepared for such things than it used to be, tens of thousands will have died as a result.”

The Guardian (July 9)

2025/ 07/ 11 by jd in Global News

“As the climate crisis throws its destructive effects ever more fully in our faces, cities during heatwaves are their own type of ground zero.” We need to “create more green spaces and more tolerable streets” Make no mistake, “extreme heat is our future” so “European cities must adapt.” It is true that “greenery, shade and swimming spots won’t solve the climate crisis, but they’re becoming ever more critical.”

National Geographic (June 18)

2017/ 06/ 20 by jd in Global News

“Dangerous heatwaves are far more common than anyone realized, killing people in more than 60 different parts of the world every year.”  Approximately “30 percent of the world’s population is currently exposed to potentially deadly heat for 20 days per year or more—and like a growing forest fire, climate change is spreading this extreme heat.” Barring major reductions in GHG emissions, “up to 75 percent of people could face deadly heatwaves by 2100.”
