“Europe’s supposed commitment to seeing Russia held to account for its actions in Ukraine seems to be trumped by its undeniable energy needs.” An overfocus on symptoms and quick fixes obscures “the path toward energy security.” Absent “coordinated foreign policy—not fragmented individual national responses…. EU member states will find themselves constantly threading the needle between upholding their values and meeting the basic needs of their citizens, a precarious exercise that will hurt the European project itself.”

“One year into a changed world, the numbers defy comprehension. More than 21 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States—a rate approaching one in 15 people, plus untold millions who had mild or no symptoms and were never identified.” Including them, the U.S. may be “approaching 60 million or 70 million infections—perhaps 20% of the population, though it varies from state to state.”

“As public health officials look to fall and winter, the specter of a new surge of Covid-19 gives them chills. But there is a scenario they dread even more: a severe flu season, resulting in a ‘twindemic’” with more sufferers and similar symptoms. “Even a mild flu season could stagger hospitals already coping with Covid-19 cases.”

“A troubling trend has emerged in the Bay Area and around the nation: More young people are getting sick, in numbers so large that in some regions they now make up the largest and fastest-growing demographic contracting the virus.” Although are far less likely to die of COVID-19, youths with milder symptoms often risk exposing others and many of them still wind up with “symptoms severe enough to send them to the emergency room or intensive care.”

“The planet recorded its 20 millionth coronavirus case Monday and U.S. lifestyle continues to face changes, restrictions and cancellations.” The real number is probably much higher, “given testing limitations and the fact that as many as 40% of all those who are infected have no symptoms.”
