USA Today (September 8)

“Intense heat, parched conditions and high winds fueled record-shattering wildfires and strained the electrical grid across much of California on Monday…. California has been struggling with a record-breaking fire season this year – more than 2 million acres have been torched. The days ahead look equally grim.”

The Irish Times (September 7)

With nearly 50,000 new cases last week, “Spain passed a grim milestone of recording more than half a million coronavirus cases on Monday, becoming the first western European country to do so amid a steep upward trend that is mirrored in neighbouring France.” Moreover, there is “significant concern” that the UK is moving down the same path to resurgence. All this comes as wet pubs look poised to reopen in Ireland on September 21.

San Francisco Chronicle (July 27)

Half a year into the pandemic, a “role reversal of sorts” took places for the giants of the east and west coasts. “California passed New York with the most coronavirus cases in the United States. That grim convergence occurred as the nation reached its own dark milestone: 4 million reported cases. California, as of Sunday, has about 452,000 cases, to New York’s 412,000.” With about 425,000 cases, Florida has also passed the Big Apple.

USA Today (July 9)

The U.S. passed another “grim milestone” on Wednesday, racking up 3 million COVID-19 cases, which “represents roughly a quarter of the world’s cases and the same percentage of its deaths.” The U.S. now strongly “leads an unenviable group. Its 3 million cases for a nation of 330 million beats out Brazil’s 1.7 million cases (210 million population), India’s 742,000 cases (1.4 billion) and Russia’s 699,000 cases (145 million).”

New York Times (June 25)

2020/ 06/ 26 by jd in Global News

“On Wednesday it was as if the country had found itself back in March — at the start of the pandemic, in the early days of the lockdown, when masks were in short supply and when the death toll was skyrocketing.” The U.S. “reached another grim milestone on Wednesday as it reported 36,880 new cases,” breaking the previous high set on April 24. Instead of containment, new cases “have roared back in recent weeks.”

Barron’s (June 3)

2020/ 06/ 05 by jd in Global News

“The stock market’s rally in recent weeks has felt awfully disconnected from the grim reality on the ground. And that only felt more true as protests erupted around the country…. Investors, however, are motivated by fear and greed, and right now both are helping—fear of missing out and greed as the market goes higher.”

Financial Times (May 9)

2020/ 05/ 11 by jd in Global News

“The grim picture of the US labour market in the midst of a lockdown that has choked economic activity will increase concerns that any rebound from the sudden deep recession could take longer than was expected just a few weeks ago.” With unemployment at 14.7%, “its highest level since the second world war,” any chances of a V-shaped recovery now look remote.
