New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg writes, “The slaughter of 20 innocent children and the six adults who tried to save them in Newtown, Conn., marked a turning point in our national consciousness…. There is no looking away from the murdered children at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. There is no ignoring the anguish felt by their parents and by the families…. And there is no escaping the fact that we must do more to protect our communities from gun violence.”

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an independent, endorsed Democratic President Obama. Obama’s position on climate change was a major factor in the endorsement. “Our climate is changing. And while the increase in extreme weather we have experienced in New York City and around the world may or may not be the result of it, the risk that it might be – given this week’s devastation – should compel all elected leaders to take immediate action.”

“Still hobbled by power outages and waterlogged transit, the New York region struggled to return to the rhythms of daily life on Wednesday, while facing the reality of a prolonged and daunting period of recovery.” Both the NYSE and NASDAQ are scheduled to resume trading with Mayor Michael Bloomberg scheduled to “open the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday morning after a two-day closure, the first for weather-related reasons since 1888.”

“On Thursday the New York City Health Department became the first in the nation to ban the sale of sugared beverages larger than 16 oz. at restaurants, mobile food carts, sports arenas and movie theaters.” Mayor Bloomberg was a strong proponent of the ban. Despite many objections, the health board is “convinced that banning mega-sized drinks would be an important step toward helping consumers not only to drink fewer calories, but also hopefully to make healthier changes to their diet more broadly.”

First New York banned cigarettes in workplaces, then parks and beaches. Now, Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to make it easier for residents to find smoke-free housing. His proposal would require that potential renters and apartment buyers be informed of a building’s smoking policy. The Mayor explained his reasoning. “Because of air circulation in buildings, if you smoke in one apartment, other people in the building do get some of that smoke.”

“A silver lining” of the financial crises is prison reform. “Inflexible sentencing policies…made the United States the world’s leading jailer” and resulted in unsustainable spending. New York is providing an example of a more sustainable alternative. “By reforming its sentencing laws to eliminate or substantially reduce prison terms for nonviolent offenders” and increasing credits for good time served, New York has reduced its prison population by nearly 2%.

Hundreds of protestors were arrested for blocking traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge as “the anti-Wall Street protest in Lower Manhattan entered its third week.” The protest has spawned similar protests in cities including Chicago and Los Angeles. Most of the protestors complaints are directed at “corporations that they say are too powerful and often unethical,” with firms that received taxpayer bailouts while still awarding bonuses singled out for extra scorn.

Urbanization is transforming the global economy and lifting millions out of poverty. A study from the McKinsey Global Institute shows that 20% of the world’s population resides in 600 urban centers, which “account for some 60% of worldwide GDP.” McKinsey believes the mix of urban areas will change dramatically by 2025. Emerging cities, and especially those in China, must be a focus for businesses that want to succeed globally. By 2025, 21 of the 25 top growth cities are forecast to be in the developing world, flanked by Tokyo, New York, London and Los Angeles from the developed world.

Many concerns over radiation are overblown. In Tokyo, the highest radiation reading of 0.109 microsieverts per hour was taken yesterday in the Shinjuku district. This compares favorably with 0.14 microsieverts in Hong Kong’s Kowloon district. In fact, “many countries have naturally occurring radiation levels that exceed Tokyo’s.” Current radiation in Tokyo is “barely above levels in London and New York.”

Mayor Bloomberg has proposed a budget for New York City which cuts 6,000 teachers, 20 fire stations, 100 senior centers, 8% of library funding, 11% of the parks and recreation budget, and 17,000 child-care options for low-income working parents. The proposed $65.6 billion budget is “less painful than expected,” largely due to the unexpectedly rapid recovery of Wall Street. “The city looks in better shape than we expected, even a few weeks ago.”
