“China’s leaders are trying to fix a problem that has dogged the country for decades: how to spread wealth more evenly.” So far the problem is intractable. Per capita GDP throughout the bulk of China (the west and north-east) “is 70,870 yuan ($9,800) and 60,400 yuan, respectively. Along the coast it is 124,800 yuan. China’s richest provincial-level unit, Beijing, is four times wealthier than its poorest, Gansu (see map). And the richest areas are pulling further ahead.”

The nation that burned coal, oil and gas for more than a century to become the richest economy on the planet, as well as historically the most polluting, is rapidly shifting away from fossil fuels.” The energy transition is further along in other places like Europe, but “the United States is catching up, and globally, change is happening at a pace that is surprising even the experts who track it closely.”

“The market capitalization of LVMH, the company chaired by the world’s richest person Bernard Arnault” reached $498 billion Thursday morning, surpassing “that of Tesla, the firm led by the world’s second-richest person Elon Musk.” The move came “as Arnault’s lead on Musk as the richest man extends to over $70 billion.”

“Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk has broken the world record for the person to lose the largest amount of personal wealth in history.” After losing an estimated $182 billion since November 2021, Musk has displaced the previous record “set in 2000 by Japanese tech investor Masayoshi Son.” Nevertheless, “Musk still remains the second-richest person in the world, falling right behind LVMH’s CEO Bernard Arnault.”
