“There’s no reason to worry about the Japanese takeover of U.S. Steel.” Nippon Steel is poised “to buy U.S. Steel for $14.1 billion, and Rust Belt senators from both parties are raising alarms.” Make no mistake, however, “large-scale capital investment by a Japanese company poses no danger to U.S. national or economic security.” Moreover, “consolidation is necessary to compete with China.” The merger would create the world’s second largest steel maker capable of competing with the state-owned Baowu Group.
