Washington Post (May 7)

“The anti-E.U. French leader Marine Le Pen’s larger-than-expected defeat Sunday in her nation’s presidential election was a crushing reality check for the far-right forces who seek to overthrow Europe: Despite the victories for Brexit and Donald Trump, they are likely to be shut out of power for years.”

The Economist (April 22)

In the UK, everything “changes with the news of an election” this June. “With a proper mandate and some clout in Parliament, the prime minister would have the chance to shake off the ‘Theresa Maybe’ nickname that we gave her earlier this year.” Meanwhile, “businesses, lobby groups and, of course, private citizens have a chance to make the case for a soft Brexit both during the campaign and after it…. The battle over Brexit was fought last summer. The battle to define what form it should take is far from over.”

“Although at this point nothing should surprise anyone about how Trump conducts himself, it was still hard not to have your jaw drop as his face-off with reporters played across screens. He lashed out personally against reporters, he resumed fighting over the outcome of the election and his loss in the popular vote, and continued steadfastly refusing to admit to facts that are beyond dispute…. This is not a way to conduct the presidency.”

Bloomberg (January 11)

“Donald Trump’s first press conference since the election basically confirmed he’s easily the least suited person to be president who ever got anywhere near to the office. “ As a candidate, “Trump displayed vast ignorance of policy and of basic rules of how the government works.” At his press conference, “President-elect Trump utterly failed to demonstrate that he’s learned anything. On health care, on Russia, on anything.”

Institutional Investor (January 9)

“Tiger-related funds are not celebrating the market’s 2016 surge.” While some “stock market investors have been whooping it up after the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index posted an unexpectedly strong 9.5 percent gain last year,”  Tiger funds were left licking their wounds. Wrong-footed by the election of Donald Trump, many Tigers tumbled far into the red, undoing solid performance earlier in the year.

Bloomberg (December 24)

2016/ 12/ 25 by jd in Global News

“Some climate activists worry that Donald Trump’s presidential election will be the death knell for the global environment. That’s almost certainly untrue. Whatever Trump’s attitude toward climate science and energy policy, two big outside factors will be much more important — technological progress and policy in developing nations.

The Economist (November 12)

2016/ 11/ 13 by jd in Global News

Trump’s election “threatens old certainties about America and its role in the world.” America’s allies have been rocked by “the sense that old certainties are crumbling…. The fear that globalisation has fallen flat has whipsawed markets. Although post-Brexit Britons know what that feels like, the referendum in Britain will be eclipsed by consequences of this election. Mr Trump’s victory has demolished a consensus. The question now is what takes its place.”

Time (November 10)

“It turns out that Donald Trump was qualified to be President, after all. He was credentialed by the American people on Election Day….. He’s not prepared for it, and his demeanor remains profoundly unpresidential–but make no mistake, it was his demeanor that won him the presidency. Every time he said something that “serious” people found unhinged, a vast swath of the country found it honest and refreshing and real, even if they disagreed with it….. He didn’t suffer for the outrage; he gained strength from it.”

Washington Post (November 4)

In Nicaragua, there is “an even more depressing election than our own.” Daniel Ortega will on Sunday, “following gross manipulation of the constitution and electoral system… preside over his reelection as president, as well as the installation of his wife, Rosario Murillo, as vice president.” Struggling with failing health, his wife can serve as a placeholder to “ensure that the presidency remains in his family; his children are waiting in the wings.”

The Week (October 20)

2016/ 10/ 22 by jd in Global News

“Hillary Clinton finished Donald Trump in the final debate of the presidential election…. There’s no other conclusion. We are now playing out the string. And the only question left after the debate is whether Trump and his hard-core supporters will accept his defeat.”
