Investment Week (April 13)

2022/ 04/ 15 by jd in Global News

“2021 was a stand-out year for environmental finance, as COP26, a new US administration, and rapid growth in industry collaboration drove climate action and commitments across businesses and the asset management industry.” Morningstar found that “the number of mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) with a climate-focused mandate grew to 860 at the end of last year… and assets in the space doubled to $408bn.”

The Economist (April 22)

In the UK, everything “changes with the news of an election” this June. “With a proper mandate and some clout in Parliament, the prime minister would have the chance to shake off the ‘Theresa Maybe’ nickname that we gave her earlier this year.” Meanwhile, “businesses, lobby groups and, of course, private citizens have a chance to make the case for a soft Brexit both during the campaign and after it…. The battle over Brexit was fought last summer. The battle to define what form it should take is far from over.”

Bloomberg (December 14)

Under the leadership of Masahiko Kuroda, the Bank of Japan’s “policies have indeed been bold — bolder than anything Abe himself has been willing to attempt. But the BOJ’s policies are allowing the government to sidestep its responsibility. That must stop if Abenomics is to come off life support. On Friday, Kuroda should begin nudging Abe to do something with his popular mandate for change. Anything.”

Washington Post (November 18)

Shinzo Abe reached two difficult, but “justifiable” decisions. He will postpone the tax increase and seek a new mandate. “The prime minister still represents the best available option to those who regard Japan’s recovery as indispensable to the global economy and, by extension, the U.S. economy.” The U.S. should “do more to support Japan’s economic recovery,” beginning with the passage “of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, whose market-opening provisions could spur Japanese farms and businesses to change their uncompetitive ways.”

Wall Street Journal (May 18)

2014/ 05/ 19 by jd in Global News

“Indians put their faith in a party promising economic opportunity and better governance over the traditional Indian formula of welfarism, patronage, corruption and hostility to foreign competition. Mr. Modi will be the first Prime Minister to govern without a coalition in nearly 30 years, and he has a rare mandate to enact market-opening reforms.”

Washington Post (July 21)

Prime Minister Abe’s strong mandate is promising for Asia, and could help reduce tension. ”A healthy U.S.-Japan alliance is the region’s best hope for stability. That alliance, in turn, depends on a prospering Japanese economy and on at least cordial relations between Japan and other U.S. friends in Asia, most notably South Korea. Thanks to Japanese fatigue with the instability of the past decade, and to Mr. Abe’s political skills, he now has the best chance in a long time to deliver on those goals.”
