“The revocation of a political opponent’s citizenship has long been a tool of authoritarian repression.” The Trump administration is borrowing heavily from this unfortunate playbook. The latest case, flimsily based on paperwork from a quarter century ago, involves a federal investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar’s citizenship. The investigation “is a chilling example of the federal government using its immense power to silence a critic.” The administration’s current tactics “evoke dark periods in American history,” something that “should disturb all Americans, regardless of whether they agree with Ms. Omar’s political views.”Tags: Authoritarian repression, Chilling, Citizenship, Critic, Federal investigation, Government, Immense power, Omar, Political opponent, Revocation, Silence, Tool, Trump administration
