“Toyota and Hyundai Motor may have a beef with U.S. protectionism, but they have one thing in common with President Donald Trump: when it comes to global car markets, it’s America first for Asia’s legacy automakers.” With the outlook “upended” by Trump’s tariffs, the U.S. still “remains by far the most important market for Japan’s Toyota, South Korea’s Hyundai and Asian rivals including Honda and Nissan. North America accounts for at least 40% of the revenue at both Toyota and Hyundai.”

“Tesla’s market value has surged to $500bn after a fresh wave of buying ahead of the electric-car maker’s debut on the blue-chip S&P 500 stock index next month.” Up over 600% this year, shares yesterday rose to $540. “Tesla’s market cap now exceeds “Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, General Motors and Ford combined.”

Despite COVID-19, AGMs will go on in South Korea. “A total of 314 South Korean companies, including Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor and SK hynix, will hold shareholders meetings this week.” They are taking special “measures to counter concerns over potential spread of the coronavirus at the meetings.” For example, Samsung has moved the meeting from its headquarters to a convention hall and “asked shareholders to make extensive use of online voting” whereas SK hynix “will increase the distance between shareholders’ seats to 2 meters to minimize physical contact.”
