“Few would envy the King his task when he begins his state visit to the United States on Monday.” Given the circumstances, his Mother would likely have cancelled the trip. We should “praise him for taking on a challenge that many would prefer to duck.” Hopefully, the visit will prove “an opportunity to prevent a temporary rupture in the special relationship from becoming permanent estrangement” and that “King Charles can be a bridge over troubled water for US and UK.”

“If one country defaults on its loans, it’s a big problem for its citizens. If a dozen countries default, it’s a big problem for the world.” Nearing the “verge of yet another debt crisis,” world leaders can still act to prevent it. “They should dust off the tool kit that helped end the Latin American debt crisis, especially the measures that convinced creditors to share the pain and accept less than what they were owed.”

China “is the world’s last major economy attempting to entirely stamp out Covid outbreaks, claiming this is necessary to prevent wider surges of the virus which could overwhelm hospitals.” At present, “tens of millions of people in at least 30 regions have been ordered to stay at home under partial or full lockdowns,” with some of the impacted residents “complaining of shortages of food and essential items.”

What “will become of all the species the planet stands to lose… if human beings cannot halt the rate at which our climate is heating and our habitats are fragmenting and our whole planet is being poisoned?” While it is “entirely possible that we will lose them all….
