“Reflecting the escalating urgency” of the current Ebola outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “has raised its response to the highest level.” By early July, the outbreak which was only declared in May had already become “the second largest on record.” While viruses like Ebola can’t be eliminated, “it is possible to contain them quickly, and global health experts are alarmed by the world’s worsening ability to do that. Our systems for responding to and confronting viruses are increasingly fractured and weakened, making everyone more vulnerable.”

The CDC found that “almost 60% of the U.S. population—and 75% of U.S. children—have evidence in their blood suggesting a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19…. By that estimate, most people in the U.S.—almost 200 million—have had COVID-19 as of February. That far exceeds the 80.8 million cases officially tallied by the CDC as of April 26.”

While there have only been 10 omicron cases in Santa Clara, “officials have “found the highly contagious variant in all four of the county’s wastewater treatment facilities, encompassing most of the local population.” The CDC said the new variant now accounts for about 3% of all cases nationwide “with the highest—13%–in the New York-New Jersey area.”
