Due to the difficulty of restricting all access by foreigners under “export-control restrictions issued by the U.S. government,” Anthropic has completely suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, regardless of nationality. This unexpected twist “suggests that the biggest corporate developers may face even more roadblocks going forward.” The move could usher in more regulation “for political and geopolitical purposes” and drive “countries to develop their own AI models so that they’re not denied access to major private ones going forward.” Greater national urgency could be “good news for suppliers of AI infrastructure, which could see heightened demand for AI hardware and related products,” but that would also “make the market more competitive for big players like Anthropic and OpenAI that need to ramp up paid usage to solidify the economics of AI development.”

Trump’s first-term “levies hurt consumers and U.S. manufacturers.” The “truth” about his past steel tariffs is that they “made U.S. manufacturers less globally competitive and prompted retaliation that hurt American businesses.” The tariffs ultimately “created uncertainty for U.S. manufacturers and boomeranged on steel and aluminum companies.” Second-term Trump just “gave the economy another jolt of uncertainty… when he signed executive orders imposing 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports.” Is his “strategy to harm U.S. manufacturers and workers?” His tariffs are “political rent-seeking at its most brazen” and benefit “the few at the expense of the many.”

“Whatever the truth about DeepSeek, China’s tech sector is light years ahead on strategy and investment.” This shouldn’t come as a surprise. “China took a strategic view of the industries in which it wanted to be competitive, invested heavily to get them established, protected them when they were in their infancy, and waited patiently for the results.” China had more patent filings in 2023 that the rest of the globe combined. It graduates double the number of STEM PhDs as the U.S. And it “is already the biggest exporter of electric vehicles.” Even without DeepSeek, “the west is already losing the AI arms race.”

“The Internet has produced some of history’s most innovative, agile and disruptive companies…. But the Internet has long been in danger of being co-opted by its least competitive and innovative part: its service providers.” Verizon, Comcast and other ISPs have been trying to “get a cut of the action” by forcing content providers to pay for access. “It’s great news that the Federal Communications Commission, after years of delay, is set to stop this from happening” with the adoption of net neutrality rules.
