The state has suffered increasingly massive and destructive wildfires in recent years, leading to scarcer and more expensive insurance policies in wildfire-prone zones.”

“The weather records for the New York City metropolitan area fell almost as quickly as the rain Wednesday night. The National Weather Service issued its first flash flood emergency ever for the city, and in Central Park, 3.2 inches of rain fell in an hour, setting a record. Newark, New Jersey, matched it, getting 3.2 inches of rain in an hour. Wednesday was the wettest day on record in Newark, with total rainfall of 8.4 inches…. Both cities experienced 1-in-500-year rainfall events. The result was one of the deadliest and most destructive flash flood events to hit the tri-state area, with at least 41 people dead by Thursday evening.”

“Australia burns as the planet bakes.” There’s no mystery why events like these have grown more common and more destructive,” but there’s still widespread inaction and occasionally denial of global warming. “If we want more of what Australia is suffering, doing more of the same is fine. If we hope to see a better future, we will have to take action to bring it about.”

Chicago experienced a “weekend from hell, when outbreaks of gunfire killed 12 people and injured at least 62″ Then, “the carnage” continued on Monday. But “gun violence in Chicago is random the way destructive wind gusts are random. You can brace yourself but still not anticipate the location or severity of a blast. Monday easily could have been the quiet after the storm.” Unfortunately, it wasn’t. “At least 10 people were shot in eight incidents Monday on the South and West sides.”
