“The developed world’s depletion of global atmospheric commons has led to extreme climatic events across the planet. Climate change is already upon us due to industrialisation in Europe and North America in the past, and in China more recently. Countries that have contributed the least towards historical global emissions — countries that are still developing and poor — are left to fend for themselves. Global poverty has underwritten the riches of the developed world.” India cannot “be expected to pay for climate sins of the West.”

“Japan and Korea have dumped billions of dollars into the foreign exchange market to prop up” their currencies. Nevertheless, “the dollar has surged 26% against the yen and has risen 21% versus the won.” The yen and won are hardly unique. “Both developed and emerging market economies, have slumped against the dollar,” but both currencies “have also been hurt by trade deficit concerns” as their “economies are importers of oil.”

“Ten years ago, developing economies were catching up with developed ones remarkably quickly.” But this “aberration” resulted from a convergence of favorable factors like “the commodities boom and hyperglobalisation of the turn of the century.” It once looked like worldwide average incomes would catch up with those of the U.S. in little more than a generation. Now, it appears the catch up will take decidedly longer, perhaps a century or more.
