American Banker (March 21)

“A new Securities and Exchange Commission proposal would require public companies to report climate-related risks across their value chain. That could be especially difficult if it means banks have to account for their borrowers’ emissions.”

The IPCC’s sixth assessment report “makes for stark reading. It reaffirms that anthropogenic climate change is real, present and lasting: it is now unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land to an unprecedented degree, with effects almost certain to worsen through the coming decades.” With this report, the IPCC “dispels any notion that the effects of the climate crisis are abstract or distant.”

A report on Toshiba “harked back to the days when Japan Inc. was a popular term to describe the perceived tight linkage between big business and government in blocking foreign influence in Japan.” The company-commissioned report found that Toshiba Corp. “worked closely with Japanese government officials to block foreign-based shareholders from exercising their rights, using inappropriate threats and language such as ‘beat them up.’”

“In the wake of the Christchurch terror attack” we need to ensure “zero tolerance for casual racism.” No longer can you simply ignore or make excuses for these views. You need to “call them out, shut them down, report them, do whatever you need to do to ensure that this level of everyday racism is no longer accepted in New Zealand…. The Christchurch terrorist who livestreamed the massacre spent two years planning it, being fairly open about it all online, in forums and social media. Someone, at some point, could have stopped it. But they didn’t.” Now we know better. “You don’t get to ignore it anymore…. Spreading hate on social media can be criminal. See it? Report it.”

The submission of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s “long-awaited final report…will be only the start of an explosive chain of events. There will be a struggle in Congress, on cable TV and social media and probably in the courts over how much must be disclosed. There also will be an epic political fight over whether the findings implicate President Donald Trump in wrongdoing that may even merit his impeachment.”

Wall Street Journal (March 17)

“Unlike most U.N. documents,” the report on human rights abuse in North Korea “demands action.”  Much credit is due retired Australian judge Michael Kirby, who chaired the commission that wrote the report. By chronicling widespread abuse with “evidentiary rigor,” they created a report with “striking emotional power.”

Washington Post (December 19, 2013)

“Blue-ribbon panels are often toothless and useless. But the eminences appointed by President Obama to review the out-of-control National Security Agency (NSA) have produced a surprisingly tough report filled with good recommendations.” The report bluntly stated that the NSA had obtained records on every call to or from the U.S., yet these mounds of intrusive data were essentially useless in preventing terrorism.
