“Scorching heat waves” are testing the “world’s resilience.” Before summer even began, “heat waves had already slammed disparate stretches of the planet, from Bangkok to Barranquilla.” The heat continued elsewhere in May and June. Now “parts of the United States are bracing for a potential record heat wave this week, while wildfires are already spreading” in the west. “In many ways, the climate disaster is already here.”

“Lytton, B.C., has broken the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada for a third straight day, hitting a scorching 49.6 C on Tuesday. The latest record was broken as a historic heat wave continues to scorch Western Canada, leading to a spike in sudden deaths in B.C. and dangerous wildfire conditions.”

Temperatures in the Arctic Circle “hit an all-time record on Saturday, reaching a scorching 38C (100F) in Verkhoyansk, a Siberian town.” In contrast, the average high is just 20 degrees. “Recent months have seen abnormally high temperatures” in the Arctic, which “is believed to be warming twice as fast as the global average.”
