Investment Week (September 29)

2025/ 09/ 30 by jd in Global News

“Which companies are actually ‘doing AI’ is the question that has to be answered.” Just as “a lot of fund houses are making a big show of talking about AI as it puts them ‘in’ this next big trend, the same is true for many of the companies they are looking to buy.” Hype abounds and the Financial Times “discovered a disparity between the AI leaps CEOs were buzzing about in their company’s investor calls and the actual investment the businesses were making into this space.” To keep “AI in check just from a risk management basis” and to separate “the winners from the churn,” active mangers are essential. “The value of active management cannot be underestimated, not just for the necessary diversification but to actually play a role in making this new era not be as ‘terrifying’ as people are predicting.”

“Despite lots of martial talk from Mr Trump, a pre-emptive strike against North Korea is a terrifying option. It would risk setting off a war on the Korean peninsula that could claim millions of lives.” The best options are still deterrence and containment, “But if deterrence is to be effective, America’s threats must be credible. So Mr Trump must stop making promises he is not ready or able to honour—promises like stopping North Korea from developing an ICBM.”

A win by Donald Trump “is an appalling prospect. The things Mr Trump has said in this campaign make him unworthy of leading one of the world’s great political parties, let alone America. One way to judge politicians is by whether they appeal to our better natures: Mr Trump has prospered by inciting hatred and violence. He is so unpredictable that the thought of him anywhere near high office is terrifying. He must be stopped.”
