The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that “greater global protectionism will endanger the world’s growth outlook… as a possible Donald Trump victory in next month’s US election raises the prospect of sharp tariff increases.” The IMF’s World Economic Outlook warns that “if higher tariffs hit a ‘sizeable swath’ of world trade by mid-2025, it would wipe 0.8 per cent from economic output next year and 1.3 per cent in 2026.” If, however, widespread tit-for-tat measures ensue, the results could be considerably more destructive.

World trade “works best when there is a referee, and for nearly 25 years a group of seven judges at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has done the job. But on December 11th this body will cease to function, because America is blocking new appointments.” Losing this final arbiter ”will make cross-border commerce unrulier and, in the long run, invite an anarchy that would make the world poorer.”

“In this era of globalization 50,000 ships carry 90 percent of the $18.5 trillion in annual world trade” and this is causing investors to take note. One firm named CargoMetrics now seeks to “map historically and in real time what’s really going on in economic supply and demand across the planet” with the goal of being “able to automatically profit from spotting any publicly traded security that is mispriced.” To do this, they are utilizing historical cargo data and the global automatic identification system that vessels of 300 gross tons or more are required to use for collision prevention.
