New York Times (January 25)
“A massive snowstorm that blanketed the East Coast moved out to sea on Sunday, leaving 28 people dead, near-record snowfall in some major cities and heavy flooding along the coast.” With over 30 inches (76 cm) of snow in some places, this ranks as New York’s second highest snowfall since 1869. Some areas received even more, with West Virginia recording over 40 inches (101 cm).

“Global CO2 emissions increased to 35.1 billion metric tons in 2013, a new record and a 29% increase over a decade ago. Of the year-over-year carbon climb, China at 358 million metric tons jumped by more than the rest of the world combined and is responsible for 24.8% of emissions over the last five years.” Developing nations now account for nearly 60% of emissions, which means “that regardless of what the West does, poorer countries that are reluctant to sign agreements that impede economic progress hold the dominant carbon hand.”

Gulf News (January 1, 2014)
The home to the world’s tallest skyscraper claimed another spectacular record with the world’s largest firework celebration. “It took only a minute for Dubai to break the previous world record,” held by Kuwait, with 100,000 fireworks. The ensuing minutes brought the total number of fireworks to 500,000, many of which were set off in view of the Burj Khalifa.

Los Angeles Times (September 28)
“It was so hot Monday in downtown Los Angeles that the thermometer broke—literally.” Los Angeles hit 113 degrees at 12:15 p.m. on Monday. Then at 1:00, the official thermometer stopped working. (It has since been repaired). Los Angeles is just one of a string of cities and regions worldwide that have set record highs during 2010.
