LA Times (December 31)

2020/ 01/ 01 by jd in Global News

“That’s the thing about 2020, a term that describes both normal eyesight and an abnormal year. 2020 vision has given us a partially corrected view of ourselves, our nation and one another. It has brought into focus some hard truths that we cannot now unsee, try as we might.” The new year “will carry with it pieces of 2020. We still have the pandemic, vaccine notwithstanding. We are at a crossroads on race and policing with little consensus on a path forward.”

New York Times (May 25)

Crown prince Mohammed bin Salman brought new hope that he would drag “his hidebound country into the modern age with a new vision.” Reform, however, is now “in reverse in Saudi Arabia” as the young prince cracks down on those who advocated for women’s right to drive. “It will be impossible for Prince Mohammed to legitimately claim the reformist mantle and achieve his economic goals as long as women are prevented from taking their full and rightful place in Saudi Arabia’s future.

The Economist (October 21)

2017/ 10/ 22 by jd in Global News

“Populism’s wave has yet to crest.” Yet the gestures Trump is making “to his angry base” are unlikely to bring relief. “The demise of NAFTA will disproportionately hurt the blue-collar workers who back Mr Trump. Getting tough on immigrants will do nothing to improve economic conditions.” Instead, “mainstream parties must offer voters who feel left behind a better vision of the future, one that takes greater account of the geographical reality behind the politics of anger.”

Wall Street Journal (June 18)

2017/ 06/ 19 by jd in Global News

Helmut Kohl’s “vision shaped post-Cold War Europe for the better. Among the many leaders who shaped modern Europe, few have been as consequential…. He saw his country through the death of the Cold War and the birth of a reunited Germany at the center of a more deeply integrated European Union.”

Newsweek (November 13)

2016/ 10/ 14 by jd in Global News

“Poor vision is not a life-threatening condition,” but it affects 4.3 billion people worldwide and “is having a seismic impact on the economic and social development of countries around the world. A landmark report by Access Economics recently demonstrated that current rates of poor vision are costing the global economy an estimated $3 trillion a year—roughly equal to the gross domestic product of Africa.”

Los Angeles Times (July 24)

2016/ 07/ 25 by jd in Global News

“Clinton will, and should, use her acceptance speech to provide a vision of what she hopes to accomplish as president and to excoriate Trump for his extremism.” She must also “work hard to make voters trust her. She is a steady and serious candidate with a commanding grasp of the issues. Going beyond her usual perfunctory defensive responses is an important step toward winning voters to her side.”

The Boston Globe (August 26)

2011/ 08/ 27 by jd in Global News

Steve Jobs is stepping down from Apple. The Boston Globe believes his visionary leadership provides a model for U.S. companies. “As US companies confront competitors around the world, Jobs offers a useful lesson—a focus on short-term matters is much less important than a vision for the future and the confidence to bet big on it.”
