“Income tax was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1799 to fund the Napoleonic Wars against France. America imposed the tax in 1861 to pay for its civil war. The coronavirus pandemic is not literally a war. But it will lead to massive debts and eventually higher taxes.”

The Economist (April 21)

“New York and New Jersey have passed the peak of hospital demand,” but Georgia, Texas and other “southern states “are entering the most dangerous period in which numbers are large, growth is still high and health systems start to buckle.” This is made all the more worrying because seven southern states “have either reopened, or plan to reopen, everything from beaches, gyms and tattoo parlours to shops, restaurants and (in the case of Tennessee) most businesses.”

New York Times (April 19)

“Tokyo may have been lulled into complacency during the weeks when Japan contained the coronavirus while avoiding economically devastating lockdowns.” Aa the Government urges a 80% reduction in contact, there is too much normalcy. “It seems too many people are trying to squeeze into the 20 percent.”

South China Morning Post (April 17)

“China’s economy shrank by 6.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2020, the first contraction since the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, confirming the economic damage done by the coronavirus pandemic.” The massive contraction “was worse than predictions of minus 6.0 per cent from a survey of analysts’ forecasts by Bloomberg.”

Wall Street Journal (April 16)

2020/ 04/ 18 by jd in Global News

“Can we please stop talking about “reopening” the U.S. economy?… There is no on-off switch. Swaths of the economy—restaurants, travel, retail shops—were already shrinking before governments ordered them shut, because people were afraid to dine, travel or shop. These fears will abate gradually, with the pace dictated by the course of the virus, not by anybody’s decree.”

Financial Times (April 16)

“Sadly, it is quite possible that when we meet again we will be no better placed to face the unequal world in which we live. Yet it need not go that way. A concern with equity in crisis management would lessen suffering in many countries now, and offer new ideas to inspire us to build a less unequal world in the future. Since we are less than half way into the crisis, dare we hope this can still happen?”

LA Times (April 15)

2020/ 04/ 16 by jd in Global News

“The worst pandemic in a century won’t solve climate change. We have to do that for ourselves.” Thanks to the pandemic, “global carbon output could fall by 5% this year,” but “emissions have to drop 7.6% per year — for decades — to stave off the worst effects of climate change.”

Bloomberg (April 13)

2020/ 04/ 15 by jd in Global News

“OPEC+ group of countries, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, finally agreed to a record cut in their oil production in response to the coronavirus-triggered collapse in demand. But the deal will come under pressure when the world becomes a more normal place again.” When demand returns, “the great battle for market share between the Americans, the Saudis and the Russians will probably restart.”

Reuters (April 13)

2020/ 04/ 14 by jd in Global News

“China fears a rise in imported cases could spark a second wave of COVID-19 and push the country back into a state of near paralysis.” Bordering Russia, China’s Heilongjiang province has become the new hotspot. On Sunday, “a total of 108 new coronavirus cases were reported…, up from 99 a day earlier and marking the highest number of cases since 143 infections were reported on March 5.”

USA Today (April 12)

With the postponement of the Masters, Tiger Woods was “rewarded with another seven months to reign as the king of the green jackets.” But recovery time could be an even bigger benefit. “This long, uncertain break as the nation has shut down due to the pandemic has to be helping the oft-injured Tiger gear up for what very well could be the most bizarre golf season we have ever seen.”
