New York Times (March 21)

“From his first announcement of the attack on Iran on Feb. 28, President Trump has issued a stream of falsehoods about the war.” It’s well documented that “lying is standard behavior for Mr. Trump,” but “lying about war is uniquely corrosive. When a president signals that the truth does not matter in wartime, he …. makes it harder to win by hiding the realities of conflict and by making allies wary of joining the fight. Ultimately, he undermines American values and interests.”

“When it comes to the border and the wall, Trump’s willful estrangement from reality is so profound that network executives and newspaper editors spent part of Tuesday in strategy sessions about how to respond to his inevitable barrage of falsehoods. Should there be a crawl of words on the bottom of the television screen to correct him in real time? Could fact checkers work speedily enough to post rebuttals online…? This is where we find ourselves. Other presidents have been untrustworthy, and others have had to be called out on it. But not like this. This is surreal.”

None positive, headlines focusing on Trump dominate the Opinions section: “There is something very wrong with Donald Trump;” “Is Donald Trump just plain crazy?” “By dishonoring the ultimate sacrifice, Trump has sunk to a new low;” “Dear Republican leaders: It’s not too late to dump Trump;” “The facts behind Donald Trump’s many falsehoods;” and “Will the GOP repudiate Trump’s cruelty to a fallen soldier’s family?”
