“Competition to manage middle eastern sovereign wealth has become fierce.” Five of the top ten sovereign wealth funds (by assets under management} “are based in the Middle East” with “roughly $2.92 trillion in assets.” Given “bleak fundraising prospects in the U.S. and Europe, managers are tripping over themselves to reach sovereign wealth funds” in the Middle East.

“Personal coaches to private-equity executives report that their clients are increasingly worried about their impact on their employees, business, and even the world.” While fundraising dominates their concerns amid recent market uncertainty, “executives are also thinking hard about other broad changes in their industry. Investment committees, limited partners, and employees increasingly expect firms — and their portfolio companies — to be more diverse, inclusive, and generally better places to work than in the past.”

“China’s regulators have unblocked the path for companies to list overseas, reopening the avenue of fundraising after a 20-month obstruction to enable businesses to recapitalise for growth in the post-Covid period.” Applications must be vetted by the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) while the issuer must adhere to rules established by industry regulators in “disclosures of customers’ data and anything that could be construed as state secret.”

“Record-high fundraising has resulted in some growing pains and new challenges for private market managers.” In 2017, “fund managers raised a record sum of nearly $750 billion. Much of this fundraising was driven by so-called mega funds, or funds larger than $5 billion,” which more than doubled their take over 2016.  According to McKinsey & Co., the largest firms are now increasingly challenged by where to deploy capital, rather than how to raise it. Maintaining “the persistency of firm performance” is also growing more challenging “as the biggest firms get bigger.”

Last year, “investment in Central and Eastern European companies through private equity and venture capital” hit “its highest rate in seven years,” continuing “an upward trajectory since 2013, when the market bottomed out.”  Private equity fundraising rose 62% and “total private equity investment in the region hit  €1.6 billion ($1.9 billion).”
