“After saving $1.6 billion since implementing its high-profile Collaborative Model in 2017, the California State Teachers’ Retirement System plans to focus on even more sophisticated cost savings efforts.” It already directly “manages 85 percent of its fixed income portfolio, and 75 percent of the global equities book in-house.” Now it plans to extends its Collaborative Model to encompass more private investments while shifting “its exposure from global equity to private credit, private equity, and infrastructure.”

“A public market downturn and an abundant supply of private equity stakes have culminated in an unmissable opportunity for secondaries investors.” Favorable “supply/demand imbalances and market dynamics” have arisen due to “the dramatic outperformance of private equity thanks to lagged marks and flat or marginally down valuations in 2022,” causing “asset owners to become overweight PE as public equity markets declined materially.” Pensions, endowments, foundations and other asset owners have become “forced sellers of private equity stakes to return to their strategic weights,” and “because of illiquidity, overhang, supply/demand imbalance, and forced selling, buyers require a material discount to transact.”

Forty-nine percent of corporate M&A professionals at private companies say they are likely to spin off a non-core division in 2023,” forty percent expect “to sell one to two businesses this year, while 7.5 percent say they are likely to pursue three to four divestitures.”

Investors are expected to sell stakes in private equity funds worth $153 billion in 2023, according to the latest PE secondaries report from Lazard’s private capital advisory team.”

“Private equity investors have little to fear from a recession, as the best returns come after these periods.” A recent report by Bain Consulting shows, for example, that “following the bursting of the dot-com bubble, buyout funds generated a median IRR of 25 percent in 2001, 40 percent in 2002, and 47 percent in 2003. In 2009, after the Global Financial Crisis, they posted a 24 percent IRR.” In the near future, however, “private equity firms still face a bumpy road ahead, despite the potentially short duration of the market downturn.”

For some time, “private equity firms have set their sights on the many profitable yet unloved parts of corporate Japan that sit under the umbrellas of conglomerates such as Toshiba, Hitachi and others.” Currently, “the attention on Japan could not be any greater. Much of the ‘dry powder’ sitting in funds raised for Asian dealmaking is now less likely to be used in China than to back increasingly ambitious deals in Japan.”

Four decades of private equity “financial bonanza” may be coming to an end after Judge Jed Rakoff ruled that “the former directors and officers of Jones Group could be held liable for approving the [highly leveraged] sale of the company, since it later went bankrupt.” Going forward, “officers and directors had better think twice before agreeing to sell a company to a buyout firm. What had for decades been considered a virtue — selling a company for a market-clearing price to the benefit of existing shareholders — might have become a vice.”
